Your gate chatters, clips the front of the snare, and chops the tail off every vocal phrase. That’s the frustration SSL X-Gate was built to fix, and at $15 it’s one of the cheaper ways to stop fighting your own mic bleed. It’s for mixers who gate drums, vocals and noisy tracking sessions and are tired of guessing.
Quick verdict
We give SSL X-Gate 4.2 out of 5. It’s a focused, well-equipped gate with visual feedback that makes setup far less blind, and at $15 the value is hard to argue with. It’s wrong for anyone wanting a multi-tool, and the learning curve is real. If gating is a daily job for you, buy it.
Why does gating still go wrong in the box?
Picture a tom track. The kick leaks in, the hi-hat leaks in, and your gate flutters open on every stray hit.
Raise the threshold and you lose the soft tom hits. Lower it and the bleed returns. Most basic gates give you one threshold and a prayer.
Vocals are worse. A breathy phrase tail dips below the threshold, the gate slams shut, and the line sounds chopped. You want it to close gracefully, not like a trapdoor.
How does SSL X-Gate handle it?
The fix starts with hysteresis. X-Gate gives you independent open and closed thresholds, so the gate opens at one level and only closes once the signal falls well below it. Chatter stops. That one feature earns its keep.
Then there’s the rolling waveform graph. You see the incoming audio scroll past, with THRESHOLD and RANGE lined up against the waveform and the gain reduction meter. You’re not turning knobs blind anymore.
The traffic light system shows open, closed and hold in three colours. Owners compare it to classic Drawmer hardware, and it’s a clever bit of design. A glance tells you what the gate is doing.
Lookahead is variable, and the lowest setting adds zero plugin latency. Turn it up and the gate opens before the transient arrives, so your snare crack isn’t clipped. Pick the lowest setting while tracking and the higher ones while mixing.
You also get PEAK and RMS detection, ATTACK, RELEASE and HOLD, and an interactive filter graph for high and low pass on the sidechain. Reviewers say that frequency-selective gating is excellent for isolating a kick from cymbal spill, with fewer phase issues than you’d expect.
What's good and what's annoying?
The expander side is lovely. EXP mode with the KNEE control widens dynamic range without abrupt transitions, so quiet material fades down instead of dropping off a cliff. Users report excellent results on vocals in particular. Mid/side processing and sidechain audition modes round it out. Hearing exactly what the detector hears is satisfying.
DUCK mode attenuates only when the signal exceeds the threshold. Pair it with your DAW’s sidechain and you’ve got intelligent ducking for a pad under a lead vocal.
Now the downsides. It’s a single-function plugin. It gates and expands, and that’s the lot. No compression, no EQ you’d mix with.
Complex sources need fine-tuning. A drum overhead with cymbal wash and room tone won’t behave on the first try. Some users report a steep initial learning curve, and with this many controls we believe them. Frustrating at first, then it clicks.
There’s no independent third-party deep-dive review we can point you to either. Judge it on the evidence above.
Is it worth $15?
Yes. Hysteresis, lookahead, a live waveform and two extra modes for $15 is a bargain. You’d pay more for a gate with half the visual feedback.
The catch is the single-purpose design. If you gate twice a year, a stock DAW gate will do and you’ll never miss this. If gating is a weekly chore, X-Gate pays for itself the first time a session full of bleed behaves.
Who should buy SSL X-Gate, and who should skip it?
✅ Buy if you gate drums or vocals regularly and fight bleed on tracking sessions.
✅ Buy if you want to see the gate working, with a waveform and a traffic light instead of guesswork.
✅ Buy if you like sidechain ducking and want a dedicated tool for it.
❌ Skip if you want an all-in-one dynamics plugin with compression and EQ.
❌ Skip if you gate once in a blue moon and your DAW’s built-in gate already works.
❌ Skip if you want a one-knob, instant-result tool. This one rewards patience.

Should you buy it?
Buy it at $15 if gating is part of your week. Dial the hysteresis in on a bleedy tom track and watch the chatter vanish.
Skip it if you wanted a Swiss Army knife. This does one job, and does it well.

Frequently Asked Questions
What formats does SSL X-Gate come in?
It's available in AU, VST2, VST3 and AAX Native for both Mac and Windows. It's officially supported in FL Studio, Ableton Live, Logic Pro, Reaper, Pro Tools, Cubase, Nuendo and Studio One.
Do I need an iLok to use SSL X-Gate?
You need a free iLok account for software authorization. That's the activation route, so set the account up before you install.
What systems does SSL X-Gate run on?
Mac needs macOS 11 Big Sur to macOS 13 Ventura, 64-bit, with an Intel dual-core or M1 Apple Silicon chip at 2.4GHz or higher. Windows needs Windows 10 or 11, 64-bit. Both need 4GB RAM minimum, with 8GB recommended.
Does SSL X-Gate add latency?
Not at the lowest lookahead setting, which adds zero plugin latency. Higher lookahead times let the gate open before the transient arrives, at the cost of added delay.
Can SSL X-Gate do ducking?
Yes. DUCK mode attenuates the signal only when it exceeds the threshold. Combine it with your DAW's sidechain for intelligent ducking.
